DWTS - Finale
May. 25th, 2010 08:48 amPeople, I flailed so hard some of the lads walking into the site thought I was having some kind of seizure.
To recap (in bullet points so I don't lose the run of myself altogether!!)
- it's Maks and Erins freestyle
- Contemporary number
- Maks brought in Mandy Moore to help him choreograph (not the singer!)
- They dance to "Alone" by Heart
- There is a couch. And a bed. And it is SMOKING HOT!!!!

And now, for the less nice part: Julianne Hough (two time winner and sister of Derek) posted the following tweets this morning:
PLEASE vote for Derek and Nicole!!!! Please please please!!! 18008683408 They were the only ones who did their own choreography!! and That was catty of me... Everyone did an amazing job! I'm just a little biase to some people, Especially on the creative choreography side!
Catty is one word, mean-spirited is another. I'm (rightly or wrongly) taking that as a dig at Maks, who she beat out in two finals. Personally, I don't like Derek, but I recognise that he's a great choreographer (frankly, he's one of the best that DWTS has). And I can understand Julianne supporting her brother. But she can do that without taking digs at the other two pros in the final. Maks got Mandy Moore to help him with contemporary, because he's been trained in ballroom his whole life. From what I can see, it looks like Anna & Evan did a jive based freestyle to Footloose, so I'd imagine ballroom specialist Anna did the same as Maks - got help from an expert to come up with the best dance they could, and I see nothing wrong in that.
But of course, it's Derek (the golden boy, Boy Wonder) we're talking about, so normal rules of logic and common sense don't apply.
And now I'm being catty. What is this show doing to me?!?!
And while we're on the subject, apparently the Beeb want Nicole to do the next series of Strictly. Now, do I seriously need to point out the ways in which THIS SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?? She's already done the show in the US (she may even win it) which would be the dictionary definition of unfair advantage. As it is, she's already taking major flack for her dance and performance experience (which, btw, I agree with - she's a Pussycat Doll, she dances for a living, and there's no way ABC should have booked her for this show. She's a ringer, and no amount of "I've never been trained in ballroom dancing and this is so hard for me" tears and histrionics will convince me otherwise.)
Wow, I didn't realise that was going to get me so irate!!

Date: 2010-12-09 12:22 pm (UTC)Can I just say I am so so SO sick of the Hough clan. I don't see their appeal, and I don't particularly enjoy watching either of them dance. I recognize that they are both *phenomenal* dancers and choreographers, but...there is no...intention behind their movements. Everything feels very robotic. Do you know what I mean? Not stiff, but...no emotion? And I don't think it's an age thing, because I love watching Lacey Schwimmer dance, and Val Chmerkovskiy (particularly together!) and they're the same ages, and I just cannot take my eyes off them.
Also...I don't see how Derek wins the Design-A-Dance every year...and every year it's another 50's jive! Don't people want something new!

Date: 2010-12-10 08:01 am (UTC)Holy moly, you have just hit the nail on the head with that - its exactly the problem I have with them but couldn't put into words. Plus I always feel that Derek shows himself off more than his partner, if that makes any sense?
Love watching Lacey dance - there is a link somewhere on my DWTS tag to the contemp rumba herself and Dimitri did to Reba McEntires "Consider Me Gone" which is one of my favourite show dances, I thought it was just phenomenal.

This!! Yes, he's a brilliannt choreographer, but as you say he does the same thing every year (then again, that's probably got something to do with how he wins it!!)

Date: 2010-12-10 09:53 am (UTC)OMG, so much yes. He did this ALL SEASON with Jennifer Grey, and I realize this might have been in part to pad a little around her injuries, but I was FLOORED that Len never called him on it. He would have crucified Maks or Tony for doing something similar (which, they never do).
And I have to say, I really *don't* find his choreography all that brill (but then again, I have no expertise in the field), I just know that everything I see about him is completely sterile.
And as far as him winning the design-a-dance...Like, I can't knock other people for who they find attractive, but he just looks like a seventeen-year-old boy to me. And the general demographic for this show- middle aged women and older- finding him attractive...well, I liken that to a middle-aged man having a crush on the Olsen twins.
Wow, I needed to rant about that, apparently...

Date: 2010-12-10 10:49 am (UTC)This is what drives me absolutely BONKERS - it's like Derek is held to a different standard than anyone else. Like his quickstep with Nicole, which was not a quickstep by any standard, it was more like a charleston or a showdance. Yet he wasn't penalised for it. But again, if it was Maks or Tony you know they would have been.
I don't understand people finding him attractive either, for exactly the same reason as you!!
Wow, I needed to rant about that, apparently...
Hee, feel free to rant away!! It's nice to have someone to talk to about DWTS!!!

Date: 2010-12-10 12:28 pm (UTC)Okay, I'm getting nitpicky, but:
Derek & Jennifer quickstep
Brandy & Maks quickstep
I mean, D&J's wasn't AWFUL, but it was the same score, and they were SO not at the same level of performance!
