[livejournal.com profile] helsinkibaby, don't know how you're going to take this.... Nigel Lythgoe (So You Think You Can Dance is in talks about a re-imagining of Fame

So You Think You Can Dance’s Nigel Lythgoe knows fame costs, and he’s ready to start paying… in sweat.

Lythgoe — who in addition to judging and exec-producing SYTYCD is also EP of American Idol and Opening Act – has partnered with MGM Television to “re-imagine” Fame, the story of a New York City performing arts high school – a concept made famous in the 1980 movie and the hit TV series it inspired.

The original movie followed students and teachers at NY’s High School for the Performing Arts and had an eclectic cast that included Irene Cara, Anne Meara and Debbie Allen. Allen and other actors from the film also had roles in the series, which ran from 1982-87 and starred Nia Peeples, Janet Jackson and Michael Cerveris (Fringe‘s September!), among others.

Despite the franchise’s popularity, a 2009 big-screen update led by Bebe Neuwirth, Kelsey Grammer and Megan Mullally – in which Allen appeared, though not in her original role of Lydia — was more of a crash landing than a graceful jeté.

No word yet on casting or when production on the pilot will start. So for now, you’ll just have to remember (remember! remember! remember!) the awesome original series, which paved the way for shows such as Glee and Breaking Pointe.

All I can say is, if it's done right, I would LOVE to see this happen!!
