FU ABC

Thanks to the amazing [livejournal.com profile] jyl22075 , I've just managed to get caught up with the Kish storyline on OLTL.

<points to icon>

They are so cute with the baby, and the scenes with the Fab Four were lovely. I'm even more annoyed now with ABC for canning this brilliant story when there is so much mileage left in it.

FU ABC - that's all I got :-(

I swear, at some point soon I will write an entry that is not about Kish getting canned...

This is not that entry.

The boys have spoken out about the smear campaign (because what else can you call it?):

Responding to the rumors that it was one actor's partying and the other's busy schedule that led to them being let go, Brett told Soap Opera Digest, "It's so false it's slander. Scott and I were nothing but professional and completely 100 percent dedicated to our work."

Scott tweeted:

"Such a bummer what all of this is turning into. I will continue to respect the decision but will remain unhappy with the tactics."

For what it's worth, I don't believe a word of the rumours - let's face it, if there was sufficient trouble to fire both actors, something would have leaked out before now (because as we know, ABC Daytime leaks like a sieve!)

And as I've said before, fans could have handled Kish being backburnered (think most of us expected it) but to can them completely is so short-sighted it's ridiculous. And the way it's been handled has been incredibly disrespectful to the actors and their fans. Scott & Brett have been nothing but classy - TIIC could learn a few lessons from them.

EDITING to add a link from [livejournal.com profile] jyl22075 to an interview Brett did today with zap2it: http://ow.ly/1qsqRu

The quote that just made my blood boil is about how they found out:

"We found out separately. I found out the day before the story broke; I was at "One Life to Live" because I was submitting my Emmy reel. And the same day I'm submitting my Emmy reel, Frank [Valentini] tells me that they're no longer continuing the storyline and that I've filmed my last day.

I do believe there's a certain way that things have to be done to protect the machine, and there are certain things that could be done differently.  Scott found out through somebody tweeting him, and absolutely, that's not the way he should've found out. It shouldn't happen that way.

Scott and I were disappointed that we'd already filmed our last day together. That would've been nice to know. We were like, "We're not even going to work together again." That was the most upsetting part."

I swear, just when you think this whole clusterfuck can't get any worse, IT DOES.

Word to the wise for today – never buy a new laptop AND pay your car tax in the same credit card billing period; it does not end well! Opened mine last night and nearly had heart failure – but I suppose it could have been worse, am thinking of changing the car so I only taxed it for 3 months as opposed to the year….

Just saw this on welovesoaps.net – Out magazine spoke to Scott & Brett at the GLAAD Awards:

Out: What are your thoughts on One Life to Live ending your storyline?
Brett Claywell: It was a journey we went on together this whole year, and we had no idea it was going to be received the way it was. I couldn’t have been more privileged to work with a better actor to figuratively and literally hold my hand through the whole process. There’s definitely going to be some sadness, but we really are proud of what we did. We’ve been boyfriends on screen, and now we get to just be brothers. If nothing else we told a great story and developed a new friendship.

Out: What was it like doing the groundbreaking sex scene?
Scott Evans: We didn’t know when we were shooting it that it was the very first one. Then afterward we heard all about the breaking of new ground, and we thought it was pretty cool.

Out: Why do you think presenting a storyline like this one is so important on daytime TV?
Scott Evans: You’re reaching an audience that you normally wouldn’t reach. These are people who may not be watching primetime TV or might not be so in to what is going on in modern times.
Brett Claywell: We’re glad to celebrate the telling of a truthful love story in every day households in the Midwest and the south, and that’s important.

Classy guys – unlike ABC, who seem to be blaming the actors for the storyline ending (if you want to know what I mean, read Nelson Branco’s latest Soapgeist column at tvguide.ca/soaps – I’m refusing to link to the piece itself, because I loathe the way that ABC are spinning this, and that people appear to be buying into it).

This was just linked on my Twitter feed - it's an opinion piece from Soap Opera Digest Online re. Kish's firing. I've quoted Mala before (when Greg Vaughan got canned - anyone sensing a theme here?) and I'm doing it now because she says everything I wanted to say in my last post, but is way more eloquent.

I know daytime is in a tough position. Believe me. I see every day that we're amidst a sea of sinking ships. But OLTL dumping three of its best young actors is not going to help keep it afloat. Scott Clifton (Schuyler), Scott Evans (Oliver) and Brett Claywell (Kyle) aren't dead weight. They're ballast, keeping the enterprise equalized and steady with talent.

I was still reeling from news of Daphnee Duplaix (Rachel) and Amanda Setton (Kim) leaving and this...? This floors me. The Kish part especially, because there has been so much critical acclaim for them and the show was lauded for writing such a beautiful story. And, yes, I will continue to laud them for that...but I'm not going to clap for getting rid of actors who make your show better. Every soap needs its B- and C-story crew to fill in the places where big plots don't spill over. And that's where Kyle and Fish come in. One's a med student and one's a cop...they're parts of the canvas that can be utilized at any time. Not only are they gay, but they're integral parts of the Llanview community. And they weren't taking up that much space. They're not on that much! Why must Kish bear the responsibility for low ratings? Dorian's over-the-top mayoral campaign was a huge part of Fish's coming-out story, wasn't it? And there are dozens of other things that were happening in the episodes they were in that could account for a ratings drop. I was going to point out that Schuyler and Gigi made love the same day Kish did, but then I realized that, oh, wait, the show axed Sky, too, didn't they? So much for making a case there. Oops.

It's just short-sighted. I'm thrilled Kish gets a happy ending and that Schuyler is going out in an exciting storyline, but I'm really saddened that in an effort to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic, OLTL jettisoned a few of its life preservers.

The news broke on Twitter last night: http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/soaps/one-life-to-live-kos-kish-4337.html - Kish are being written off the show and will be gone by mid-April.

Honestly, I’m floored at this. I don’t understand the reasoning behind this – the Kish storyline has gotten OLTL a whole load of buzz and media recognition, they would appear to be one of the most popular pairings on the show and are played by two of the best young actors in daytime. And with the ever-looming rumours of cancellation, it makes absolutely zero sense to me to write them out now.

The quote from Valentini that really galls is, “We are concluding the story that we set out to tell with Kyle and Fish. We are very proud to have broken new ground with a same-sex couple on daytime.”

Ooohkay then, you’re proud. That’s great. But just because you’ve gotten these two characters together and that phase of the story is over, doesn’t mean there’s not new story to tell. There is a LOT of story that can be told with Kish – i.e. the baby storyline, the adjustments that’s going to cause in their relationship, how are they going to react/cope? How will the rest of Llanview react? Or how about the fact that Kyle has a dark side and has done some pretty shady stuff in the past? Have that come back to haunt him and see how Oliver (who, lets face it, comes across as a bit of a Dudley-Do-Right) reacts.

There’s plenty of stuff there that they can mine – I’m not for one second advocating that Kish are front and centre all the time (focusing on a couple of characters and stories to the detriment of others just does not work – yes GH, I’m looking at you and your Sonny-Jason-Mob fetish) but there is a place for them on the canvas, there has to be balance. Backburner them by all means, but letting them go just comes across as FV cutting off his nose to spite his face.

Now, getting to the worst part of the whole sorry saga; Scott Evans (Fish) wrote on his Twitter, “Anyone who thought my tweets were foreshadowing, that is not the case. Tweets were for something completely different. This is news to me.” (Bolding mine)

So basically, FV didn’t even have the common decency to tell the actors first, never mind face to face. They had to find out via a website. Stay classy, ABC Daytime. Stay classy.

Does this remind anyone of LemonLyman.com or is it just me?

Saw this on Twitter first thing - Link to ONTD -  Scott Clifton has been let go from OLTL, and his co-star Farah Fath has used her myspace to blast fans who criticise her performance: Farah Fath has her middle finger up to the posters on TWOP & SON most everyday. i give it my all in every show. please stop talking sh*t about me for one g*ddamn minute.

I lurk at the OLTL board on TWOP, and I don't think anyone there has been overly mean about her performance, it's mostly the writing that people seem to have a problem with. I've certainly never seen it said that she doesn't give it her all or tanks scenes/stories. (Unlike some actors....)  But man, actually criticising fans on her myspace seems to be asking for trouble (especially considering they've just killed off her sister and her kinda-boyfriend has just been canned....)

Re Scott Clifton, I think it's a mistake, as he's one of the better young actors in soaps right now. However, it looks like GH is trying to rebuild the Quartermaine clan, so I'm wondering if there are larger ABC politics in play there....

LJ is up and down like a fiddlers elbow tonight - and for once it's not my crappy internet connection!! What the heck is going on?? At least Twitter is still up and running (crossing fingers....)

Seeing as I couldn't faff around on LJ, I decided to spend my time productively and burn stuff to DVD from my external HD - seeing as we're at the start of the new TV season, and my external HD is quite full, it makes sense!! So have got some done, and have a list of stuff to burn off over the weekend (love my lists, I do!)

Also, thanks to jyl22075, I was able to watch today's Kish (Kyle and Fish) clips from One Life To Live. I swear, this storyline is just so damn good right now. Great acting and writing - and I have to say, having seen Brett Claywell as mostly comic relief on One Tree Hill, it's great to see what he can do with decent material. The whole storyline is just so deliciously soapy and I love it! I'm also really loving Cristian and Layla - her line today where she said that if Prince Charming walked in, she wouldn't notice actually had me laughing out loud!

Now, I'm going to head to my bed - so glad today is Friday and I get a lie in tomorrow (these 5.30 mornings when its pitch black and cold outside are just horrible - and sadly it's only the beginning of them!! It is going to be a LOOOOONNNNG winter!)
